Stackhouse Burger Bar

Stackhouse Burger Bar is a newly opened burger joint located on Granville and Drake. Back in January, I saw their "Opening Soon" sign and I made a note that I would like to try their burgers when they opened. After much debating of what to eat on Friday, my boyfriend and I decided to try Stackhouse.

The types of burgers that Stackhouse serves aren't your normal run of the mill beef burgers that you will find at other burger joints (like Veras or Fat Burger). The burgers are made with freshly ground Alberta AAA prime rib and are topped with specialty toppings like pancetta (instead of bacon!), portabellini mushrooms, Guinness cheddar cheese, Camberet cheese, fried fennel, and many other toppings. The types of toppings on the burgers depends on what type of burger you order. There are many different types of burgers here: beef burgers, lamb burgers, chicken burgers, ahi tuna burgers, veggie burgers, dungeness crab burgers, and venison burgers! All burgers are served on a brioche bun with butter lettuce and tomatoes.

I arrived first at the restaurant and decided to wait inside for my boyfriend. When I entered Stackhouse, I was greeted and they let me have a choice of where to seat. I decided to sit at one of the tables by the window. The restaurant had high ceilings and the decor was simple, and nice. After I sat down, the waiter handed me paper menus. I looked through the menus, contemplating what to eat while I waited for my boyfriend to arrive.

Menu

When my boyfriend finally arrived, we made our order. I had the Pancetta Burger with a side of Mesclun Salad and he had the Stackhouse Burger with Fries.

Pancetta Burger
6.5 oz local prime rib patty with pancetta, Guinness cheddar, chipotle aioli and butter lettuce served on a brioche bun.

The beef patty was really good! It was well seasoned, cooked well and overall tasty. But I found that the pancetta and Guinness cheddar got lost on the burger. I didn't quite taste those components on my burger :( All I tasted was the beef patty. If the pancetta was cut slightly thicker, then maybe the taste would have came through.

Mesclun Salad
Organic spring mix, edamame and grape tomatoes, served with lavender-infused honey citrus vinaigrette.

I really liked the salad a lot. It was fresh and the vinaigrette had a nice acidic kick to it. I liked the edamame in the salad, but my boyfriend didn't like it all that much. He thought that the beans were a bit out of place.

I Love Hotdogs liked the beef, portabellini, chipotle aioli and the brioche bun. But he felt that the Guinness cheddar and pancetta flavours got lost amongst the other burger-y flavours.

Fries

The fries were crispy on the outside and potato-ey on the inside. I Love Hotdogs thought that the fries were well salted, but I thought they were a bit too salty.

After eating our burgers, we decided to order some dessert. We saw on the menu that they had Deep Fried Ice Cream! I love deep fried ice cream and we decided to order it. It took a while for our dessert to arrive :(

Deep Fried Ice-Cream - $9
Vanilla ice cream wrapped in brioche dough, deep fried to perfection, sprinkled with cinnamon sugar and served with a Kahlua chocolate ganache and fresh fruit.

I liked the cinnamon and sugar on the brioche dough. But the chocolate wasn't anything special and didn't really add to the dish. Overall, I thought this was an okay dessert. I've had better before. It would had been better if the outside dough part was hot and crispy. When our dessert arrived, the outside was already cold :(

Overall Impressions: The burgers are good here but are quite pricey. I found that the portions are small for what you pay. The dessert was expensive and was just okay :( Also, with the high ceilings, it was really really noisy inside the restaurant. But one day, I  do want to go back and try the Dungeness Crab Burger since the description sounded pretty tasty. I'll just need to save up some money before going back :P

And... the bill... $42.56 for 2 people
