Moderne Burger

We have passed by Moderne Burger several times while heading to D.B. Bistro, and finally had a chance to try it out after a friend invited us to dinner there.  The decor is that of a 50's diner, simple and well lit.  It's a fairly small restaurant, so they won't sit you until your entire party is there.  That meant we had to wait a bit as one of our party was late, but they were really great about it.  In fact, the service here was really fast and friendly.  The guy on the left in the picture below who I assume is the owner, even helped clear our plates and told some amusing horror stories about people trying to park out front of the restaurant after our friend's car was backed into by some idiot lady who couldn't drive.

The menu at Moderne Burger is very simple.  Burgers, fries, soda, and shakes.  I'd had an ice cream earlier in the day, so as much as I would've liked to have tried a shake, I went with a cherry coke.  It came with a maraschino cherry in it and was good, although I would've liked a bit more cherry flavour.  One of our friends got a vanilla root beer which was also pretty good, but could've used more vanilla flavour.

My girlfriend and one of our friends split a creamsicle milkshake which I tasted a bit of.  The ice cream tasted really good, very natural and fresh.  The milkshake was thick and tasted like a creamsicle.  You can make your milkshake malted or extra thick for an extra charge.

For our mains, we all had burgers of course.  You have your choice of moderne steak, ground turkey, veggie, and salmon.  They all come with lettuce, tomato, red onion, mayo, and house sauce.  The girlfriend and I got the steak burgers and added cheddar cheese and mushrooms while our friends got a regular steak burger and a veggie burger.  We split an order of fries as we noticed they give you a ton of them.  They mention on the menu that they cut your fries to order which is neat.  They also mention that they don't add anything to their meat patties including seasoning which I was a bit leery about as I think some seasoning is usually necessary.  When we ordered, the owner mentioned that the mushrooms were fresh and that they would add some water-y-ness to our burgers.  He was right!  The burgers were juicy on their own, but with the mushrooms there was a bit too much liquid, and Flowerbunny's bun was completely soaked through.  The burger tasted really good though.  I would've liked if the meat had been seasoned a bit, but everything tasted really fresh.  I think I'd forgo the mushrooms for bacon next time though.

Speaking of bacon, our friend who had been there before ordered the dipping sauce with his burger.  It ended up being this bacon flavoured mayo type dip that was out of this world good.  An excellent complement to the fries which were also really tasty and not too potato-y which fresh fries often are.

Overall Impressions: Moderne Burger has great decor and a nice simple menu.  The service is super friendly and fast, and they make you feel right at home.  The food is fresh and delicious, and at $10.95 for a burger and a split-able order of fries, it's also priced pretty well.
