Viet Sub & Beard Papa's

With only $7 in my pocket, I didn't know what I could eat for lunch... and finding a place where I can buy lunch for less than $10 downtown is quite rare. After much thinking, I remembered Viet Sub. It's a small (really small) hole in the wall sandwiched between the Beard Papa's and Kushi Box on Robson. They serve a variety of Vietnamese subs, pho and salad rolls. It's a place where you can get lunch for under $10! The salad rolls are about $2.75, subs range from $3.25 - $4.25 and pho for $6.45.

My co-worker and I ventured out from Yaletown to Robson street. It was really busy when we arrived. After placing our orders, there was barely enough room to stand inside. I ordered the Veggie Sub and a Shrimp Salad Roll.

While waiting for our orders, I saw a sign posted where if you bring your receipt into Beard Papa's, you get 10% off! Wanting some cream puffs too, I asked for my receipt.

Gyoza King

Gyoza King is a Japanese izakaya which is a restaurant that serves drinks and tapa style dishes that are meant to be shared. Gyoza King is well known for their hand made gyoza. I really like the gyoza there and I think they are well made.

The restaurant is relatively small and cozy. They get pretty busy there during Fridays and weekends. So if you go during dinner hours, expect a wait. When we went, we went relatively early and didn't have to wait in line. For 2 people going, ordering 6 dishes is usually enough food.

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka

I realized that I've been eating a lot of noodles and going on a noodle craze lately.

The next noodle/ramen shop is Santouka on Robson. I've been to Santouka a couple of times but never really think about going there since I always default to Kintaro for ramen. But this time, I didn't feel like anything too heavy and thought about Santouka since their broth there is lighter and less greasy than Kintaro.

Another reason why I don't frequent Santouka is that the prices for their ramen there is slightly higher than most ramen places. It ranges about $10 to $13 for a bowl of ramen, $5 for gyoza and they also charge about $2 extra for corn, an egg or seaweed. The good thing about this place is that there are rice combos where you can add a bowl of salmon, ikura (fish eggs) or cha shu (BBQ Pork) rice to your ramen. The rice combos will run you about $15 per set. And also for $1 more, you can upgrade your ramen to a large size.

We ordered Gyoza, Toroniku Miso Ramen and Cha Shu Miso Ramen.

Japadog - Robson

When I saw that Japadog was opening an actual store back in February, I was excited because walking to the Robson store from my work place would be closer than trekking out to the Burrard and Smithe stand.

One lunch hour, my co-worker and I decided to try out Japadog. The menu at the store is slightly different than the one at the stand. They have the standard Terimayo, Oroshi and Okonomi and also some new hot dogs: Love Meat, Negi Miso, Tonkatsu, Yakiniku Rice and dessert hot dogs! They also have shaken fries on the side and you can choose from a variety of flavours: Aonori (seaweed), Teriyaki, Japa Shio (sea salt), and Butter & Shoyu.
